WhatsApp is bringing these 5 major updates from next year

WhatsApp, especially this year, has been doing a lot of changes and updates, some of which are not really noticeable. There were other updates to combat the spread of fake news. And it continues to bring more features on the platform.

Some updates in the past were met with disapproval but were later a most used feature. An example is the Status feature, which Facebook stole from Snapchat (Stories) to Instagram and then transferred it to WhatsApp.

Well, users would need to get accustomed because Facebook is bringing tons of features to the WhatsApp messaging platform next year. Some of the changes are just cosmetic and doesn’t affect the app in any way.

So we’ve listed 5 top changes we expect to see in the WhatsApp in 2020, most of which have been confirmed.

Major changes coming to WhatsApp

1. Name change from WhatsApp to “WhatsApp from Facebook”

Yes. Facebook wants to inform you that the WhatsApp messaging app is theirs. Already, Oculus is now “Oculus from Facebook” and not just WhatsApp is getting this seemingly unimportant name change. Instagram is also going to be “Instagram from Facebook”.

As trivial as it may seem, Facebook is probably doing this to differentiate its products from others like the illegalWhatsApp mods floating around, WhatsApp Gold, GB WhatsApp and the rest. “We want to be clearer about the products and services that are part of Facebook,” a spokesperson from the company said.

Others have also said the “from Facebook” is misleading because WhatsApp was not developed by Facebook.

2. Adverts! Adverts! Adverts!

From 2020 onwards, WhatsApp will begin showing adverts. Facebook is making plans so that business entities can run adverts on the world’s most popular messaging app. It was tipped in a tweet from the Facebook Marketing Summit.

Facebook defended the move:
“People and businesses are finding WhatsApp a great way to connect. In the months ahead people will be able to see a business catalogue right within WhatsApp.
With catalogues, businesses can showcase their goods so people can easily discover them.

This will surely be met with dislikes but does Facebook really listen to users of its products? Businesses will gladly welcome it nevertheless.

3. WhatsApp Status can be shared to Facebook

WhatsApp will allow users to share their Status posts directly to Facebook. It isn’t just Facebook, the Statuses can also be sent to other apps like Gmail, Google Photos or Instagram. This new feature is currently available for users in WhatsApp’s beta programme. The feature is coming with a new sharing option under users’ own Statuses to enable easy sharing.

There will be an “Add to Facebook Story” option but Statuses won’t be shared automatically to Facebook since it requires manual authorisation.

4. Calibra cryptocurrency wallet

Facebook officially announced its plans for developing a new cryptocurrency. Libra, Facebook’s crypto, according to the company, will be pegged against a number of major currencies and government securities.

As the company wants to develop its own currency, it is understandable that it creates a digital wallet as well.

From Facebook, the digital wallet, Calibra “will be available in Messenger, WhatsApp and as a standalone app — and we expect to launch in 2020.

“From the beginning, Calibra will let you send Libra to almost anyone with a smartphone, as easily and instantly as you might send a text message and at low to no cost.”

Recently, the Libra crypto has been recently faced with a couple of obstacles from the American government which suggests that Facebook puts a hold on the development till they find ways to regulate it properly.

5. WhatsApp users to use one account across multiple devices

This is probably the best of them all. WABetaInfo reported that WhatsApp was developing an update that will enable a user to use the same account on multiple devices without hassle. This is in contrary to the current situation where one account is tied to one device.

The report said: “Note that this is also the reason why WhatsApp for iPad was not released yet, even though it’s ready. WhatsApp wants to give to the user the possibility to use the same phone number on iPad and main device.

With this update, you can use WhatsApp on a Pc without having to connect your mobile device to the internet.

There’s one last update which seems a little too far. WABetaInfo reported that there’s going to be an update that will prevent users from taking screenshots of private chats. Like, hey Mark, this is too much!
